PURPOSE

Under supervision of and collaboration with the Executive Director and Staff, this position will support activities and programs of the Watertown Development Company (WDC) while gaining relevant experience to the respective field of study. The internship program offers project work intended to give a broad exposure to economic development. The nature of assignments will vary, allowing for the opportunity to be creative, while providing a practical and challenging experience.

This internship is a 12-week paid opportunity for the period of May 2025 through August 2025. The dates will be flexible per schedule and availability of candidate. Applicants will receive $18 hourly pay, and hours will range from 25-30 hours a week. Work week will be Monday through Thursday from 8:30a-5p. This is a non-benefit eligible position.

DUTIES

Community Intern Engagement

  • Coordinate with staff on initiatives to promote the intern community in Watertown.
  • Conduct monthly check-ins with summer interns via one-on-one or groups to learn about experiences in Watertown.
  • Analyze information from check-ins to suggest future programs or activities.
  • Coordinate with staff to execute an end of summer event for interns.

Community Childcare Initiative

  • Collaborate with Codington County Connects to develop childcare assistance programs.

  • Participate in reoccurring childcare discussions.

  • Coordinate with staff to engage with community partners to implement programs at proposed childcare sites.

Housing Task Force

  • Contribute to data entry and record management.
  • Answer phone calls and emails related to Housing discussions within the Housing Team.
  • Maintain and track the budgeted amount of funds for the initiative.
  • Assist in tasks related to qualitative and quantitative data collection compilation, analyses, and the development of reports, per direction of the Housing team.
  • Attend partner meetings as requested by the Housing Team.
  • Coordinate and set up meetings for the WDGC Consulting team and any other duties as assigned.

Workforce/Talent Attraction Initiative

  • Assist staff in coordinating an event based on findings and strategic initiatives proposed by Wadley Donovan Gutshaw Consulting’s (WDGC) research on labor markets.
  • Provide support to staff on strategic initiatives such as attending meetings and preparing materials.

Economic Experiences and Responsibilities

  • Participate in community outreach events.

  • Explore opportunities for business development and marketing techniques.

  • Explore finance and grant opportunities for business development.

  • Develop an industrial/manufacturing database to include business name, DUNS number, NAICS code, headcount, etc.

  • Compose letters and emails to community stakeholders.

  • Professionally interact with city and state officials.

  • Support various office duties by exploring internal processes and make recommendations for improvement.
