JOB SUMMARY:Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Firefighter/EMT position responds to emergency fire, rescue and medical incidents; provides support functions, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, emergency responses, records and reporting duties, and emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and inter facility transports. Additionally, this position is expected to plan, organize, direct and control fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations. This position is expected to provide emergency firefighting, rescue and basic level medical care to the residents of the community. All Fire department staff have frequent contact with outside emergency response agencies, other city or department staff, and the general public.

This position works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions to include but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death and inclement weather. Employee will generally be assigned to rotating shifts, consisting of 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off duty. Some assignments of day shifts, consisting of 40-hour workweeks, typically eight hours per day, may be required.
This position must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently. The incumbent must be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. Must have the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 165 with or without assistance. Must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction and have a level of vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Incumbent must be able to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
